Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire on May 5, 1862. This victory represented a boost of morale for Mexicans who were fighting a larger French force. This is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day. Within Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla where the unlikely victory occurred. However, for many Mexicans, this day is like any other. It's not considered a bank holiday, thus offices, banks and stores are all open.

In the US, however, Cinco de Mayo is believed to have a deeper significance of Mexican culture and heritage. Today, you will see many celebrations with parties, parades, mariachi music, folk dancing and traditional foods. the biggest festivities are held in LA, Chicago and Houston.
